The new service will also connect to Brisbane and the budget airline says it is the next step in Darwin becoming an international hub.

The Denpasar-bound flight had the first Territory-trained flight attendants on board.

Jetstar customer service manager Casey Lahiff was among the Darwin-based graduate class to crew the new international flight.

She told the Northern Territory News she was looking forward to the flights.

“I’ve always wanted to be a flight attendant, ever since I can remember,” she said.

“Three years ago I was a domestic flight attendant – when Jetstar extended their Darwin services, they offered me this opportunity.”

Darwin to Denpasar is the third international flight Jetstar operates from the NT capital.

Flights to Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City have been running for some time.

Jetstar chief executive officer Bruce Buchanan said the new service demonstrated the airline’s commitment to the development of Darwin as an international and domestic flying hub.

Jetstar has celebrated (13-Nov-08) a major milestone in its goal to establish Darwin as a strategic transport hub into near Asia, with the graduation of its first Darwin cabin crew trainees at a ceremony held in Darwin.

A total of 20 cabin crew trainees graduated following an intensive five week course held for the first time in Darwin.

Following completion of the final steps of their induction into Jetstar cabin crew, they will take to the skies to operate Jetstar’s new Brisbane-Darwin-Bali (Denpasar) daily service to commence on 03-Dec-08.

Jetstar cabin crew are employed by Team Jetstar, a subsidiary of the airline.

Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Bruce Buchanan said it was a significant achievement, with the new Darwin cabin crew base a direct result of the airline’s partnership with the Northern Territory Government.

Mr Buchanan said, “The development of our aviation hub in Darwin is continuing to gain momentum. Today we are celebrating a significant achievement which marks the start of our crew base in Darwin. Moving forward, Jetstar will be basing crew and support staff in the Northern Territory as part of our commitment to more firmly establish our domestic and international hub in Darwin.”

“We’re committed to investing in the Darwin community through more than just flights but with human resources and support infrastructure to manage our existing flying operations in Darwin including international connections between Australia and Asia as part of a broader and ambitious pan Asian strategy.”

“We’ve identified Darwin as a strategic pivot for the growth of our Asian strategy with our short haul fleet of A320 aircraft.”

By the end of this year, Jetstar will operate a base schedule of over 60 weekly services from Darwin including international services flights operating double daily to Singapore (14 times weekly), daily to Bali (7 times weekly) and Ho Chi Minh City (5 times weekly).

Jetstar also connects Darwin with direct domestic services to Melbourne, Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide supporting the Qantas Group’s two brand operations from the Northern Territory capital.
